When we think about usable space, we tend to focus on floor space. However, if the ceilings are not too low – think vertical and take advantage of available wall space for storage. Try a well-placed bookshelf or a group of staggered open shelves on the wall. Mix in a few decorative objects to make it an interesting as well useful addition to your living room.
There are two types of people: those that prefer a fabric sofa in their living room and those that enjoy more a leather sofa or couch. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages. Leather furniture tends to look more elegant, sober and imposing whereas fabric upholstery makes it look more casual.
Depending on the square footage of living space in your home, you may or may not have the luxury of a separate family room. The family room plays a different role in the home than the living room (although some homes effectively and seamlessly combine the two, due to space constraints). Where the living room tends to be more formal and geared toward entertaining and visits, the family room in general has more of a lounge feel.
Mixing and matching styles is also important when coming up with an original design approach for a living room. A modern space can feature vintage influences. Similarly, a living room can also be defined by industrial elements spread throughout its surface.
