Family rooms are generally more informal than living rooms. They tend to be a bit further from the front door, even in the basement at times, set away from the first-impressions façade potential of the house. This means that you can more easily incorporate a casual décor style into the family room. Often, this concept is manifest via comfy stuffed sofas with plenty of pillow options.
Frame your fireplace with a set of built-in shelves. This is a great way to create a feature wall in a living room. Feature walls look best when they are symmetrical, so make your shelving units equal in size. In the living room design above, we used open shelves. You can also add doors to cover the lower portion for closed storage. Add a pair of sconces and a mirror or painting above the fireplace to complete the look.
